Common Causes of Washing Machine Squeaks

As a technician, I’ve encountered countless washing machines with squeaking issues, and often the cause isn’t as serious as it sounds. Here’s a look at common culprits based on my experience.

1. Loose Drum Bearings

In many cases, squeaking comes from loose drum bearings. Over time, even solid models like the Bosch WAT28400UC may experience wear. When bearings loosen or wear down, they create friction, leading to that high-pitched squeak. If left unchecked, the squeak can turn into a grinding noise. From my experience, tightening or replacing the bearings will bring back smooth, silent operation.

2. Drive Belt Wear

I frequently see older and newer machines alike, such as the LG WM3998HBA, with worn-out drive belts. A cracked or stretched belt can’t grip properly, causing squeaking and sometimes slipping. Replacing the belt is a relatively easy fix, and I recommend doing it promptly to avoid more costly repairs later.

3. Overloading

Many homeowners overlook this, but overloading can stress the washer’s internal components, especially in front-loaders like the Samsung WW22K6800AW. When I see overloading issues, I advise clients to follow the load recommendations strictly to prevent wear on both the drum and the motor. A balanced load not only reduces noise but also prolongs the machine’s life.

4. Shock Absorber Issues

I often hear from clients that their machine starts squeaking only during the spin cycle. This is usually a red flag for worn shock absorbers, particularly in models like the GE GFW650SSNWW. These absorbers help stabilize the drum, and when they wear down, the machine shakes more, producing a squeak. Replacing them restores stability, especially in high-speed cycles.

2024 Update: Smart Diagnostics in New Models

Newer machines, like the Electrolux EFLS627UTT, now come with diagnostic systems that notify you about potential issues. These smart systems make it easier to catch problems early on. I’ve seen firsthand how these alerts help my clients stay on top of maintenance without needing an immediate call-out.

In my line of work, I’ve found that tackling squeaks early with regular maintenance, tightening parts, or replacing components like belts and shock absorbers can save you from expensive repairs later.
